Build Brothers Inc. – FAQ
Welcome! If you’re thinking about roofing, solar, or adding a battery system, we know you probably have a ton of questions—especially about timing, how things work together, and what your home actually needs. We’ve put together answers to the questions we get the most. If you don’t see yours, just give us a call—we’re happy to walk you through it.
What services does Build Brothers offer?
Build brothers offers roofing, solar, home battery, HVAC and window services.
What areas do you service?
We service the whole of San Diego country!
Are your roofing inspection free of charge?
Yes! We offer free roofing inspections with a complementary narrated video to show you the condition of your home. Our professional team will always be completely transparent on what your home needs.
How long does it take to get my project started after I sign a contract?
Great question—and we get this a lot. Once you sign, we immediately begin handling permits, HOA approvals (if needed), and any utility paperwork. That part usually takes 2–4 weeks, depending on your city. After that, we schedule installation, which can usually happen within 1–2 weeks once everything’s approved.
We’ll keep you in the loop every step of the way with timelines, updates, and a dedicated project coordinator.
Can you install roofing and solar together?
Yes! And honestly, that’s one of the biggest advantages of working with us. Since we’re fully licensed in both roofing and solar, we design both systems to work together from day one. That means your roof is protected, your solar system is optimized, and you only need to work with one team from start to finish.
We even coordinate the entire installation so you’re not juggling multiple contractors.
What’s a “lift and reset” and do I need one?
If you already have a tile roof and it’s still in decent shape, we can do a lift and reset—that means we remove your existing tiles, install new underlayment (the waterproof layer), and then put your same tiles back on. It gives you a refreshed, leak-proof roof without paying for all new materials.
Lift and resets are popular for homeowners adding solar, because we can redo the roof and install solar without compromising the look of your home.

How does the federal tax credit for solar work?
The Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) allows you to deduct 30% of the cost of your solar system from your federal taxes. This applies to the total system cost, including equipment and installation. You’ll claim the credit when you file your taxes. We recommend speaking with a tax advisor to understand how it applies to your specific situation.
Are your roofing products fire retardant and made in the USA?
Yes. We offer Class A fire-rated roofing materials, the highest level of fire resistance available. Most of our products are sourced from U.S.-based manufacturers, which helps avoid tariff-related price spikes and supports local jobs.
Do you subcontract your work? How long have you been in business?
No, we do not subcontract our work. All solar and roofing projects are completed by our in-house, licensed, and trained team. Build Brothers has proudly served San Diego homeowners for over 10 years, delivering high-quality craftsmanship and local expertise.
How do I know if I need a full roof replacement or just a repair?
We provide a free inspection and honest assessment. If your roof is generally in good shape with minor issues, we’ll recommend a repair. If it has widespread damage, leaks, or is near the end of its lifespan (usually 20–30 years), a full replacement might be the smarter investment—especially if you’re going solar.
What happens if I move or sell my home with solar?
Solar adds value to your home and can make it more attractive to buyers. If you own the system outright, it typically transfers with the home. If you’re financing, the loan may need to be paid off or transferred to the buyer. We’ll guide you through the process and help make it seamless.
How does a battery help lower my bill?
A battery stores excess solar energy during the day, so you can use it at night or during peak utility rate times—this is called load shifting. It helps reduce your reliance on the grid, lowering your Time-of-Use (TOU) charges and increasing your overall energy savings.
Why do I need a battery if others don’t have one?
While solar alone saves you money, a battery provides backup power and helps you maximize your savings under California’s TOU rate plans. With rolling blackouts and grid instability becoming more common, a battery ensures you have power when others don’t.
Can I give you my credit card information?
Yes, we accept credit card payments and ensure your information is handled securely and confidentially. We follow all PCI compliance standards to protect your data.
Can you send me a receipt?
Absolutely. We provide electronic and printed receipts for all transactions. Just let us know your preference.
Why doesn’t solar power my house during a power outage?
Most grid-tied solar systems shut down during a power outage for safety reasons—this protects utility workers who may be repairing power lines. To have power during outages, you’ll need a battery backup system or a fully off-grid setup.
What does being off-grid look like? Do batteries really power the whole house—even with AC?
Going off-grid means your home operates completely independently of the utility grid. It requires a well-sized solar system, multiple batteries, and energy-efficient appliances. Yes, batteries can run your entire home—including AC—but the system must be designed properly to meet your usage needs. We can help you determine if full off-grid living is right for you.
